Nigerian Army states 1, 200 killed by Boko Haram in 2 years

(AGI)

Abuja - According to the Nigerian army over 1,220 people have been killed by Boko Haram, the extremist group wishing to Islamize the entire country, since the end of 2009. These updated figures were provided by Nigeria's Chief of the General Staff Oluseyl Petinrin, who considers significant the success achieved by security forces in fighting this group, "arresting and killing many terrorists, which has greatly reduced Boho Haram's leadership." Returning from a summit of high-ranking officers held by ECOWAS - the body representing 15 west African Justify Fullnations - Petinrin said that the battle against Boko Haram is no longer just a Nigerian problem, but one that concerns the entire region. Boko Haram terrorists move in border areas between Nigeria, Chad, Niger and Cameroon, explained Petinrin, "and that is why we must join forces so has to regain control over the situation as quickly as possible." In recent days Nigeria and Cameroon have signed an agreement addressing closer cooperation for controlling their respective borders, both maritime and on land. Nigeria's Foreign Minister, Olugbenga Ashiru, described this agreement as "a milestone in bilateral relations between the two countries" which share borders measuring over 2,000 kilometres and a history not without tension and clashes over territories, specifically those on the border. The threat posed by Boko Haram, in the meantime, has also spread to a group of local journalists who in recent days have been "invited to stop distorting the meaning of our messages when we claim responsibility using the telephone." . .
